There’s a spirited old house in the very heart of vibrant Plaza Midwood that is the realization of a dream for Marti Ackerman. It’s a dream that boasts handmade arts and crafts from both Native Americans and non-native American artists. That house is the home of Tribal Wisdom where the merchandise is very reasonably priced since most items are purchased directly from the artists themselves. The variety in those offerings is far greater than one might expect. Sure they have hand-crafted drums, jewelry and dream catchers. Those items seem almost mandatory at a place called Tribal Wisdom. But browse through the displays and you’ll discover one-of-a-kind artwork, myriad books, beautiful flutes, colorful hand-crafted pottery, striking handwoven baskets, inspirational CDs, cozy wool blankets, aromatic incense, flavorful teas, and the list goes on and on. New items arrive all the time. For some physical pampering, there’s a Healing Center upstairs. The Center includes two massage therapists, a sound therapist, a rolfer and a sacred cranial energy worker. So can something as concrete as a store really capture the elusive essence of someone's dream? For Ackerman, Tribal Wisdom has done that and more. "It's more than just a store," she explains. "It's about honoring the culture and heritage that is passed down from generation to generation."
